No.13 Roscón de Reyes.

Spain is a Christian country, so naturally it celebrates Christmas, but there is one day that is more important than Christmas. It's the day of Los Reyes Magos on January 6. Los Reyes Magos, in Spanish, Three Wise Men or Three Doctors of the East in English, are said to have been the three kings Melchior, Balthasar and Caspar, who guided by a comet, rode camels from the East to Bethlehem to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

I won't bore you with a detailed explanation because it would be too long, but the day of Los Reyes Magos is a very exciting day for chidrens in Spain. It is because the children get presents. Some children get both Christmas presents and Los Reyes Magos presents. Besides the presents, in Los Reyes Magos eat the crown shaped Roscón de Reyes.

Inside the Roscón is a small ceramic doll, and because Roscón is eaten in small portions, it is said that whoever wins the doll will be blessed with good luck. And those who had dry fava beans in them will have to prepare a Roscón next year on the day of Los Reyes Magos !

In my family we didn't celebrate Los Reyes Magos so much, but there was once a doll in the Roscón we ate when we celebrate with another Japanese family. As I was munching, I felt a crunching sensation in my teeth. There was only one time later or later, that a doll hit me. I don't remember what good fortune came my way after that.

Now I don't remember the taste of Roscón or the dolls. If there is a place in Japan where I can eat Roscón, I would love to try it again.
