In Those Days

No.14 Time of Mass.

Since the article on religion has been going on for a while, I'll just add this one. At elementary schools in Spain, there was a time of mass jointly with the grade levels, held at intervals of about once a month. I think Japanese people are confused because they are not familiar with Christianity. Mass is a ritual held in Catholic churches, while it is called worship in Protestant churches.

My school has a cathedral where mass is celebrated and a priest performs the rite. Misa is the Spanish word for mass. I didn't like the mass time because it made me feel alienated as a non-Christian. At mass, two or three students nominated in advance by the teacher, present an event for which they thank God, but I have never presented one. My homeroom teacher, Ms. Beatriz, whom I consider my mentor, took care of me in every way. Once I was nominated and thought about what I was going to present, but for some reason I was not nominated on the day of the mass and did not present. I was relieved, but also a little disappointed.

Christians also eat and drink Christ's body as bread and his blood as wine. At mass, the priest gives comunnion to the faithful in the form of hosiery, a round white cracker-like object, instead of bread. The paintings depicts communion. Communion is celebrated at the end of school mass, and since I was not baptized, I was the only one left in my seat waiting for the rest of my classmates to finish. Ms. Beatriz said I could eat it, but I refused because I felt bad even though I was not a believer. Now I would go to eat because I want to know what it tastes like.
